Artist Statement

Using textiles, wood, metal, leather and found objects, I synthesize people, places and events into multi faceted, visual works.

Gridded frames contain free-floating canvases that seek to express the vulnerability and strength found in each subject.   Unraveling and loose ends sit in juxtaposition to steady geometric forms.

These sculptural quilts require a conscious deceleration into slow repetitions of labor in a fast moving world.  They invite the viewer to slow as well and pay attention to detail.  Each approach to the work reveals something new, just as quiet reflections reveal something new about a life.

                                                 Taos Gateway

Bahom held shards of pottery dug up from the reservation land surrounding the Taos Pueblo.  His finger traced the ancient geometrics of his ancestors  then pointed to the work of his own bowls where those patterns live on.  Something shifted inside.  Only in hindsight did I recognize the gateway.

I had gone to Taos, New Mexico to write music and I did, but during an artist residency at the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation, I was also processing a great deal of art particular to that region. My mother owns what is believed to be a native American wedding vessel.  It consists of one bowl with two spouts, one for each partner to drink from.  I turned that vessel in my hands many times throughout my childhood as my mother spoke so admiringly of the culture.  Perhaps this familiarity played a role in how deeply I embraced the southwest and felt compelled to begin working on this first project.

                                                 The Language of Moss

Confined by the limits of the boundary layer, the habitable still space between surface and air flow, moss survives throughout time in complete containment, out in the wide open.

                                                           Workbench Remains

The day came when my father's hands could no longer conduct the business of home repairs.  Soon after, a moving van transported the contents of my parents home to an apartment.  I salvaged the decades worth of jars loaded with nuts & bolts.

                                                      Into The Fray

(Moving from lower to higher realms of conscious awareness made visible)

The repetition of thoughts unchecked  -   a sure path to tight boxed in places made of certainty

Only the student moves into the gray area to face the static and loose ends within the buttoned down facts

The truth - always reserved for the master holding stillness deep within the fray
